FIERBOIS CD Launch!

FIERBOIS CD Launch!

  • Canadian Museum for Human Rights (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

After nearly a decade of playing and touring together, Madeline and Caitlin Broms Jacobs will launch their first CD! Madeline writes, “The title of the album, Sing to Me Again, references the lyrical nature of the repertoire. But is also represents the silenced voices of the 20th Century; the composers who have undeservedly been underplayed, and the composers who have been restricted in artistic expression.”
Fierbois chose to feature composers from the Soviet Socialist Realism movement, an era when composers and artists were mandated to represent an idealized representation of life there. These works, with their “national sound through modality and their rhythmic and melodic folk idioms”, captivate the listener in this perfect combination of oboe and piano.
As compelling as the music are the stories that come with the selections, masterfully told by Maddy and Caitlin.
The release of this CD takes place, appropriately, in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, a space dedicated to enhancing the public's understanding of human rights, to promoting respect for others and encouraging reflection and dialogue.
The concert is pay-what-you-can. Persons donating $20 and above will receive a copy of Sing to Me Again.

Triple Thread

Triple Thread: A triple bill featuring acoustic and electroacoustic, improvised and composed, and vocal and instrumental music!

Set 1: Impromptuo (Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim & Joey Chang)
Set 2: Madeline Hildebrand
Set 3: Warp Duo (Scott Li & Qiujiang Levi Lu)

About the performers:

Canadian pianist Madeline Hildebrand is happiest with her hands full. Praised as “extraordinary” with “an instinctive understanding of beautiful sound” (Jon Kimura Parker), Madeline infuses traditional repertoire with riveting energy and carves at the cutting edge of contemporary, all while juggling audio cables and awe-inspiring chops. Whether cooperating with a singer or a sine wave, Madeline’s collaborative instincts lead much of her work. She was recently featured on composer T. Patrick Carrabré’s award winning album, 100,000 Lakes (2021) and in the Banff Centre’s 2022 Classical: Evolution artist development program.

Based in New York City, Impromptuo is an innovative improvisation-focused duo made up of violinist Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim and pianist Joey Chang. The duo has been commissioned and presented by Metropolis Ensemble, House of Yes, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Fifth Wall Performing Arts, and National Arts Diversity Integration Association in 2020. Though primarily trained in European classical music, Impromptuo draws influence from traditions of free jazz, experimental electroacoustic music, etc., and suggestions from you!

Scott Li is a Baltimore-based classically trained violinist, composer, performer, improviser, filmmaker, recording engineer, and sound artist blending the tonal Romantic chamber music tradition with emotive experimental ambient electronic music.

Qiujiang Levi Lu is a Baltimore-based composer, free-improviser, and sound artist whose works explore the spatiality of electroacoustic sound, audio-visual interactivity between performer and audience, and phenomenology of sound. Lu’s compositions range from purely acoustic to experimental electronic and incorporate their love of listening to everyday sounds and using them in creative ways.
